An open letter to the Staff of West Shore Village

Our Mother Lucy Cecil, passed away on February 2nd. She was among the first residents at West Shore Village in Port Perry, when she moved into one of the new bungalows in 1999 after her husband Arch, passed away. In June 2005, she moved in the Main Residence for the remainder of her 94 years. In total, Lucy spent nearly twelve years at West Shore Village.

In that time she came to know every member of the staff, and every one of them knew Lucy. As Lucy's family, we observed daily the outstanding professionalism of the West Shore staff, whether in the kitchen, housekeeping, maintenance, nursing, personal care, or management. Together they provided a level of care for Lucy that was superb by any standard, and we are most grateful for their dedication to service. They provided full and complete care for the duration of Lucy's stay and easily accommodating her incrementally increasing needs as the years progressed.

But what made Lucy's stay extra special were the kindnesses and courtesies extended to her daily by the staff that went well beyond what one would expect from a paid assisted living facility. Every greeting was cheerful and every assistance rendered cheerfully. From a management team that looked after her combined care to the nursing staff that tended her medical needs, to the personal care staff who took care of Mom's daily needs, we knew throughout her stay that she would never suffer inattention. The housekeeping, maintenance and kitchen staffs were similarly special in their dealings with our Mother, not simply as paid professionals, but as genuinely caring human beings. Everyone treated Lucy with kindness, patience and dignity.

Our family feels blessed that our Mother was fortunate enough to spend the final period of her life at West Shore. In the last two years of Mom's life, her needs increased to the level of that provided only by a nursing home facility. The West Shore management team quickly made all the necessary arrangements allowing Mom to remain in her "home" and along with the personal care staff, provided superior quality nursing care for her. And, for that, we are especially grateful. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
